ABOUT ME

My name is Jamaal Agard; I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Basketball has always been more than just a game to me—it was my therapy growing up. It taught me discipline, built my confidence, and helped me form lifelong connections. From high school courts to adult leagues, my love for the game has never faded. Some of my best memories are of watching streetball at Rucker Park as a kid, completely captivated by the energy and creativity of New York basketball.

I founded Mecca Hoops because I believe basketball is a powerful tool for unity and real change. This isn’t just about competition—it’s a platform that celebrates talent, culture, and purpose. New York City is full of raw, untapped talent, and I want Mecca Hoops to be a vessel that helps shine a light on it for the world to see.

Mecca Hoops honors the memory of two people who deeply inspired me. Senyo "2 Step" Toponwey was a friend who dedicated his life to helping others through basketball before tragically losing his life to gun violence. Hazelann Letren-Agard, a family member that showed me the meaning of resilience with her battle with cancer. Their legacies will live on forever.
